Setting up a discovered attack: threat (2)
In this lesson we will look at the first type of forcing move: the 'threat'. You will learn that with a threat you can set up a discovered attack.
With a 'threat' we distinguish between attacking a piece, a mate threat or threatening to promote. In the example we look at an attack against a piece.
What do you have to do?
Prepare a discovered attack with a threat. Then win material by performing the discovered attack or discovered check.
With 1.Nc6, white places a knight on the same line as the white rook and attacks the bishop at the same time. The bishop can only be defended by moving it to c7, but then three pieces are on the same line. The white rook indirectly attacks the bishop. Time for the knight to find another piece to target. With the discovered attack 2.Ne7+, white has found a second piece to target in the black king. White wins the bishop: 2...Kg7 3.Rxc7.
